All valid points and I cannot disagree with them. That said, I am a firm believer in planning and estimating and do not interpret your points to imply estimating isn't worth the effort. I don't use any estimates to predict the future per se, but rather to set client expectations for predictability. A useful estimate is based on documented assumptions. If the assumptions change, the estimate changes. That's just the variable nature of estimates. I also time-box my estimation process so it doesn't take on a life of it's own. Estimating is like achieiving speed-of-light or absolute-zero. The closer you get to 100%, the more costly the process. Do your best, and go with it. It's not right or wrong, it's degrees of precision. Just my 2¢.

#peoplefirst was never just a tagline or marketing slogan during my time at Ultimate Software. It was something embedded in the DNA of every person that worked at that organization as an UltiPeep because people were always put first. Seeing the wave of familiar names impacted by the recent #UKG layoffs is heartbreaking especially with all of the top notch talent that I know left that organization. Remote vs. Onsite vs hybrid work. This is a hot topic in a world where companies are struggling to understand that balance. This was on my mind as I waited for my Delta flight to Minneapolis that was delayed by two hours. In my career I have worked in all 3 environments and there are pros and cons to each. As one who works mostly remote right now let me share some thoughts on how to make it succeed. One of the biggest complaints I hear about remote workers is that they are not visible and cannot collaborate or participate well in teams. My advice to remote workers is to be visible. I try to visit our main office every month. When I am there I meet with everyone I can -my team, my boss, my boss' boss, my peers and even agencies and vendors. When I am in town we hold "all hands" events for my entire org. I have breakfast and dinner with key partners. I put in the face time and I make sure I am "present". When I am working from home I also work hard to be "present". I always turn on my camera - even in super large virtual meetings. Sounds simple but you would be amazed how few people so this. I always ask questions, share my thoughts, and participate in the meetings. In individual meetings I take a few minutes to talk about the person and their lives, the normal casual conversation that one would have in the building. By being "present" when in person and on the zoom/webex/teams meetings it allows me to have the flexibility to stay in Michigan, opens up more career opportunities and maximize my impact. Oh and thanks to Delta for the multiple direct flights between Detroit and Minneapolis (even when you are 2 hours late).
